Many legends imply that since the most remote antiquity, the vine was present in Sancerre. With the XIIth century, already a famous red wine, resulting from black Pinot occurred , the "Duke Jean de Berry" qualifies it already "better wine of the kingdom".
On its peak with 312 meters of altitude, Sancerre overhangs the Loire. As early as year 582 "Gregoire de Tours" mentions vineyard in his writings. Sauvignon will be developpera later. Ground and men make of it a wine of quality recognized and present on all the best tables in the world.
Sancerre is a medium wide vineyard of 2500 hectares which produces 125 000 hectoliters of white wine and 30 000 hectoliters of red wine and rosy. The outputs are limited to 62 hectoliters per hectare in white, and 52 hectoliters per hectare in red.
Approximately 400 wine growers throughout 14 villages, in controled label of origin, work this ground made of 3 types of ground.
Pouilly, far from 15 km to Sancerre extends its vineyard, of 140 hectares in Pouilly sur Loire and 280 hectares in Pouilly Fumé, on right bank of the Loire. Smoked Pouilly, resulting from type of vine sauvignon (white smoked), affirms a great personality. Its honest gold color, its stone nose with rifle and its astonishing savour of honey and grassy nuances make a wine which will not be forgotten as of the first mouthful. Pouilly sur Loire, light, sharp and fruity, is delicious to drink apart from the meals.
Menetou-Salon is a confidential vineyard of 400 hectares, and nevertheless famous which one finds trace in the writings of 1063. 10 villages are gathered on the hills of this vineyard planted on sediments limestones of the higher Jurassic era. This wine was already appreciated per "Agnes Sorel", favorite of the king, and per Minister of Finance of Charles VII.
The vineyard of Quincy, planted on 180 hectares of consisted of sands and gravel, extends on 2 villages. Quoted in the Bubble of Callixte II in 1120, it is one of the oldest vineyard of the area.
The vineyard of Reuilly, planted on 140 hectares of calcareous marl as well as sand andgravel, extends on 7 villages. Its wines, in the Midle Age , descended the Loire towards England and Flandres.
The Coteaux du Giennois skirt the Loire and are planted on 150 hectares of siliceous grounds and limestones. They produce white win resulting from sauvignon , reds and rosy resulting from a black assembly of gamay and pinot. The discovery of grape pips of the II° century proves the seniority of the vineyard which extends today on 14 villages.
